I recently lost my husband, Howard to cancer.  We were married 54 years.  Over the years we resided in several states:  San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; New Providence, NJ; Stamford, CT; Maggie Valley, NC and Atlanta, GA.  When we retired we permanently settled in Whispering Pines, NC (an hour south of Raleigh, NC).

We have a son and a daughter who were both born in San Francisco, CA.  Our son & daughter-in-law have been married 30 years and have 2 sons in their 20’s.  Our daughter and son-in-law have been married for 25 years and have 2 teenage boys.  While living in New Jersey, I began a career with Bell Laboratories and continued working with AT&T for 27 years until retiring in December of 1997.

We bought a small motel in the Smokey Mountains near Asheville, NC and operated it for 13 years on a seasonal basis.  Upon selling the motel we invested in rental property in the Pinehurst, NC area, which I continue to manage.

In 2006, Howard and I went on a Holland America cruise to Alaska and in October of 2013 we took a riverboat cruise along the Rhine River for 10 days which stopped at many interesting European countries.  We enjoyed traveling to Hawaii (our favorite island was Kuia).  We took small trips driving our Christmas-red corvette visiting many states across America.

We often visited our families and have been so proud of all the achievements our grandsons have accomplished in their youthful years.  I continue to live an active life and often travel to be a part of our extended families activities and interests.

Judy Barra Fleming

I married Howard Fleming in Port Orchard, WA on June 18, 1960 (had our 50th wedding anniversary on June 18, 2010). We have two children, a son and daughter. Our children are both married and each family has two sons; giving us 4 wonderful grandsons whom we enjoy immensely.

We have lived in many places: Seattle, San Francisco, New Jersey, Connecticut, Georgia, and North Carolina. I was employee with Bell Laboratories in NJ and upon divestiture of the phone company I worked for AT&T and retired from AT&T at Atlanta, GA in December of 1997.

Howard and I bought a motel in western North Carolina (The Smoky Mountains) and operated the business for 6 months of the year for 13 years. We sold the business in 2007 and in turn invested the money in rental property. In 1999 we purchased a home in the Sandhills, Pinehurst, NC and now live here full time. We don’t golf but we do enjoy our home on the lake. Howard has always wanted a Corvette; that was his 2008 Christmas gift; a 2009 red corvette. We have fun going on short trips and I have fun going to the thrift shops in the corvette. (Gotta pay for it somehow) Ha Ha!!. Some of the Pinehurst consignment shops are better than Nordstroms!
